Falling | Kale and Sweet Corn
Posted by Bria under Main Dishes, Side Dishes, Vegetables

October was a powerful month. It managed to pull the perpetually sunny southern California into semi-submission to its wiles. During our 12-day visit to the east coast in the middle of the month, something here changed. Upon our return, it was as though a switch had been flipped. Suddenly it was dark for the first four snooze cycles of my alarm clock. My drive home was cloaked in navy velveteen, the sky betraying its last few gasps of mauve behind inky silhouettes of palm trees that keep watch over Sunset Boulevard. Though warm and golden during the day, dawn and dusk decidedly fell prey to the seductive, autumnal call of October.
I can’t blame them. Even in temperate zones, fall is cotton-clad warmth. Fall is cozy. Fall is a gilded, tender embrace before the year tumbles swiftly and rambunctiously into oblivion. However fleeting it may be, fall is a lovely time of year.

As I bid adieu to summer’s berry-laden bounty each year, I am quickly comforted by the sweet, earthy delights of squash and wintry greens. Enter kale, and its acerbic wit. Growing up, I enjoyed heaps of kale in a delicate beef stew, speckled at the last minute with a beaten egg. Its stiffly leafed fortitude is no match for heat; no matter how many leaves you add to the stew, it always seems to accommodate them.
Though I had planned to braise a bunch of kale with cauliflower and beans last week, I couldn’t resist tossing a few leaves into a blistering hot pan with garlic and the last ears of the summer’s sweet corn. I made this for myself one night when I was home alone, fully intending it to complement some leftover chicken but never making it that far. The back-arching tang of the lemon joins with a bit of sea salt to goad the vegetables into asskicking mode. Pay attention, they seem to say, this is going to knock your socks off. Hang on tight and keep another pair of socks handy; November is here, and it isn’t messing around, either.
Kale and Sweet Corn
Serves one – can easily be doubled as needed
Inspired by Molly Wizenberg, Bon Appétit October 2009
Enjoy as a hearty side dish, or as a very light entree on a day when you’ve had too much lunch
Ingredients
1 T olive oil
2 large kale leaves
1 ear of fresh corn
2 cloves of garlic, sliced thin
Half a lemon
Sea salt
Fresh pepper
Rundown
- Clean and cook corn
- Trim and dry kale
- Heat olive oil
- Add garlic
- Sear kale
- Cut corn
- Toss corn, kale, lemon, salt, pepper off heat
Shuck the corn, taking care to clean off all the silk. Place the corn in a large pot and cover with water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat – when the water is boiling, the corn is done. Drain the water and set the corn aside to cool just enough for you to handle it.
Rinse the kale and pat the leaves dry with paper towels. Fold each leaf in half so the center rib is exposed along one side. Using a sharp knife, cut along the rib to excise the bulk of it from the leaf. You won’t cut all the way to the top of the leaf; just as far up as you need to cut to remove the bulky part of the rib that you don’t want to eat. Discard the ribs and chop the remaining leafy bits into 1”- wide strips.
Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet. About a minute after the oil is really shimmering, add the garlic. Wait a moment, then add the kale. It will crackle and snap, but the spatter should be minimal so long as the kale is relatively dry. You will see it transform quickly, from dusty green to intense forest. Quickly stir a few times with a spatula until the color has uniformly changed. Remove from heat.
Cut the corn from the cob with a sharp knife and scoot the cut corn into a bowl. Add the kale and garlic. Give the lemon a generous squeeze over the bowl, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and toss with a fork to combine. Eat immediately.

Came away with some new perspectives I had not considered before, and after x4x those ideas felt more complete, the kind of content that stays with you a little while after reading rather than slipping out the moment you switch tabs and move on with your day to whatever comes next.

Thank you for keeping the writing honest and the points easy to verify against your own experience, and a stop at kathypatton reflected the same approach, no exaggeration just steady useful content that I can take with me into my own work without second guessing every sentence I happen to read here.

Picked up a couple of new ideas here that I can actually try out, and after my visit to relayperk I have even more notes saved, this is the kind of resource that pays you back for the time you spend on it which is rare to come across in this corner of the web.

Decided to subscribe to the RSS feed if there is one, and a stop at sunfieldemporium confirmed that decision, content that I want delivered to me proactively rather than just remembered when I have time is content that has earned a higher level of commitment from me as a reader looking for reliable sources.
Now recognising that this site has earned a place in the small group of resources I treat as authoritative, and a stop at blog33between confirmed that placement, the difference between resources I trust and resources I just consume is real and this site has clearly moved into the trusted category through consistent quality over time.
A welcome reminder that thoughtful writing still happens online, and a look at mivarospace extended that reassurance, the modern web makes it easy to forget that careful writing exists and finding sites that practice it is a small antidote to the cynicism that builds up from too much exposure to algorithmic content.
Picked up on several small touches that suggest a careful editor, and a look at appatoll suggested the same hand at work across the broader site, editorial consistency at a granular level is one of the strongest signs that an operation is serious rather than just hobbyist and this site reads as serious throughout.
Closed the post with a small satisfied sigh, and a stop at webthrive produced the same gentle exhale, content that ends well is content that respects the rhythm of reading and the writers here have clearly thought about how their pieces close rather than just trailing off when they run out of things to say.

Started this morning and finished at lunch with a small sense of having spent the time well, and a look at bluehearthmarket extended that satisfaction into the afternoon, content that fits naturally into the rhythm of a working day rather than demanding a dedicated reading block is increasingly the kind I prefer.
My usual response to new bookmarks is to forget them but this one I have already returned to twice, and a look at blog33age pulled me back a third time, the actual return rate to bookmarked sites is the real measure of value and this one is clearing that measure at a notable rate already.

A piece that respected the reader by not over explaining the obvious, and a look at aerotrove continued that calibrated approach, finding the right level of explanation is one of the harder editorial calls and this site has clearly thought carefully about what readers will already know versus what they need help with consistently.
Now planning a longer reading session for the archives, and a stop at sablenet confirmed the archives are worth that longer commitment, sites with archives I want to read deliberately rather than just sample are rare and this one has clearly earned that level of interest based on the consistency of what I have already read.
Once I trust a site this much I tend to read everything they publish and that is the trajectory I am on with this one, and a stop at solardash confirmed the trajectory, the rare progression from interested reader to comprehensive reader is something only certain sites earn and this one is earning that progression rapidly.
Worth pointing out that the post avoided the temptation to summarise everything at the end, and a look at macromesh continued that confident closing approach, content that trusts readers to retain the substance without being reminded of it at the end is content that respects the reader and this site practices that respect.

Really nice to see things explained without overcomplicating the topic, the words flow naturally and stay easy to follow, and a short visit to xtgdjhrt only added to that experience because the same simple approach is used across the rest of the page too without any change in tone.
Liked the careful word choice throughout, every term seemed picked for a reason rather than thrown in casually, and a stop at gobblegrovehub continued that precise style, this kind of attention to small details is what separates careful writing from the usual rushed content that dominates blog spaces today across pretty much every topic I follow.
A slim post with substantial content per word, and a look at rapidbyte maintained the same density, the content per word ratio is something I track informally and this site scores high on that ratio compared to most sources I read regularly which is a quiet indicator of careful editorial work behind the scenes.
Found this useful, the points line up well with what I have been thinking about lately, and a stop at ginadawson added some angles I had not considered yet, definitely walking away with more than I came for which is the best outcome from time spent reading online for any kind of topic.
Found the section structure particularly thoughtful, and a stop at heritagemerge suggested the same care across the broader site, structural choices guide the reader through the material in ways most people do not consciously notice but feel the absence of when those choices are made carelessly or not at all.
Started imagining how I would explain the topic to someone else after reading, and a look at blog44fail gave me more material for that imagined explanation, content that improves my own ability to discuss a topic is content that has actually transferred knowledge rather than just decorating my screen for a few minutes.
Learned something from this without having to dig through layers of fluff, and a stop at halocloud added a bit more context that helped tie things together for me, definitely a useful corner of the internet for anyone who wants real information without the usual marketing nonsense around it that often ruins similar pages.
A piece that suggested careful editing without showing the marks of the editing, and a look at moonveilgoods continued that invisible polish, the best editing disappears into the prose and this site reads as having been edited with skill that does not announce itself which is the highest compliment I can offer any blog content.

Review my page: Basketball Wett Tipps
Assalomu alaykum, to’rt-besh oydan buyon shu yerda tikaman, shuning uchun fikrimni bo’lishmoqchiman. Rostini aytsam, dastlab unchalik umid qilmagandim — oldin ikkita saytda pul yechishda muammo bo’lgan. Bu yerda esa hozircha meni jiddiy boshog’riq qilmadi.
O’yinlar miqdori rostdan ham kattagina — hisoblamadim, biroq taxminan 7000 ga yaqin. Ko’pincha Pragmatic Playning mashhur o’yinlarini aylantiraman: Sweet Bonanza bilan Gates of Olympus. Playn GOdan Book of Dead klassikasi ham bor, NetEntning yaxshi ishlari ham yetarli. Faqat bitta narsa jonimga tegdi — provayder bo’yicha saralash ozgina chala, kerakli o’yinni topguncha ancha varaqlaysan.
Live bo’limi menga ko’proq yoqadi. Evolutionning stollari bor, tirik krupyelar bilan blackjack, ruletka, Crazy Time kabi shou-o’yinlar esa kechqurunlari to’lib ketadi. Aloqam shahar sharoitida barqaror, shu sabab uzilish bo’lmadi, ammo mobil internetda goh-goh sifat pasayadi. Yangi ro’yxatdan o’tganlarga birinchi depozitga 100% bonus hamda 200 bepul spin beriladi, otыgrыsh sharti 40x atrofida — rostini aytsam bu oson emas, shu bois men bonusni ko’pincha rad etaman. Deposit qilmasdan promo vaqti-vaqti bilan bo’ladi, joriy takliflarni 888starz da ko’rib olsangiz bo’ladi.
Ro’yxatdan o’tish ikki daqiqada bo’ldi, eng kam to’ldirish juda past — o’zim 10 000 so’m chamasida sinab ko’rgandim. To’lovlarda karta, Skrill, Neteller hamda kripto ishlaydi. USDT bilan pul olish menda yarim soat oldi, kartaga esa bir sutkacha kutdim. Hujjat tekshiruvi so’ralgan edi, albatta — ID surati jo’natdim, tez ko’rib chiqishdi.
Telefonda ishlash normal, Android-ga ilova saytdan yuklanadi, brauzer versiyasi ham yomon emas. Qo’llab-quvvatlash onlayn chatda ruschada 10 daqiqada javob berdi, o’zbek tilida bo’lsa har doim topilmaydi — aynan shu tomoni biroz yoqmadi. Litsenziyasi Kyurasao, ya’ni O’zbekistonda hammasi o’z mas’uliyatingizda — buni bilib turing. Men oyiga budjet belgilab qo’yaman va shundan oshirmayman.
Felt slightly impressed without being able to point to one specific reason, and a look at davidsteele continued that diffuse positive feeling, when content works at a level you cannot easily articulate the writer is doing something with craft rather than just delivering information and that is something I have learned to recognise.
Going to share this with a friend who has been asking the same questions for a while now, and a stop at bluestreammarket added a few more pages I will pass along too, this is the kind of generous information that earns a small thank you from me right now and again later this week.
Now feeling the post has earned a proper recommendation rather than a casual mention, and a stop at blog44grounds reinforced the recommendation strength, the difference between mentioning and recommending is a small editorial distinction I observe in my own conversations and this site has earned the upgraded recommendation level from me confidently today.
Now planning a longer reading session for the archives, and a stop at blog66culture confirmed the archives are worth that longer commitment, sites with archives I want to read deliberately rather than just sample are rare and this one has clearly earned that level of interest based on the consistency of what I have already read.
Reading this in pieces over a coffee break and finding it consistently rewarding, and a stop at deltaapp extended that into related material I will return to later, the kind of site that fits naturally into small reading windows without requiring a long uninterrupted block is genuinely useful for how I actually browse.
Got something practical out of this that I can apply later this week, and a stop at pelixoway added more details to think about, this is exactly the kind of content I bookmark for future reference rather than the throwaway listicles that dominate most search results these days for almost any common topic.
Now appreciating that the post did not try to imitate any other style I might recognise, and a stop at gadgetduquotidien continued that distinct voice, content with its own register rather than borrowed from elsewhere is content with real authorial presence and this site has clearly developed that presence through what feels like patient editorial work.
Bookmark earned and folder updated to track this site separately, and a look at anchortrustbond confirmed the folder upgrade was the right call, organising my reading list so that good sites do not get lost in a sea of casual bookmarks is something I do more carefully now and this site warranted its own spot.
Now realising the post has been quietly doing important work in my mind for the past hour, and a stop at rtpadipati138 extended that quiet processing, content that continues to do work after I close the tab is content with afterlife in the mind and this site is producing those long lived effects at a meaningful rate.
Started imagining how I would explain the topic to someone else after reading, and a look at blog44when gave me more material for that imagined explanation, content that improves my own ability to discuss a topic is content that has actually transferred knowledge rather than just decorating my screen for a few minutes.
The structure of the post made it easy to follow without losing track of where I was, and a look at blog44firsts kept the same logical flow going, this site clearly understands that organisation is half the battle in keeping readers engaged from the first line to the last across any kind of post.
